The Behavioral Health Clinical Learning Collaborative created an accelerated pilot program to study and analyze Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) principles and design initiatives to improve safety and treatment outcomes. Working with two hospitals and their community mental health centers, the pilot projects encompassed brief didactic training sessions, resources, and experiential learning opportunities. One pilot developed a Triage Tool to glean trauma history and bring patients with behavioral health signs and symptoms into a more invested collaboration with their care providers. The second pilot Integrating Trauma Informed Principles in the Emergency Department consisted of formal staff training and the use of a validated tool to demonstrate the qualitative analysis of the training.

 

“Remembering how effective the trauma-informed frame of reference is when working in extremely busy emergency departments keeps me in check. It is important to become mindful and ask ourselves, ‘What has happened to this client that has shaped their behavior? How can I be of service? How can I set an example for other staff members in the hospital?
